  The Puzzle
In 2024, the Anacostia Trails Heritage Area (ATHA) contracted Parker Strategy Group to provide a comprehensive historic interpretation scoping report for the Bladensburg Battlefield. A critical piece of Maryland history, the Battle of Bladensburg needed to gather information on what the broader community wanted from the Bladensburg Battlefield historic interpretation and how ATHA can help facilitate the public's vision.

How we helped

The Parker Strategy Group team conducted a community survey, held community meetings, interviewed key stakeholders, and combed the most recent literature on historic interpretation. This effort produced a comprehensive report detailing the new interpretive plan for the Battle of Bladensburg. This included coalition planning, updates to existing interpretive elements such as signs, markers, and tours, along with providing options for new interpretive methods that will engage new audiences. Finally, the report included three case studies of similar historic sites that ATHA could model best practices that other sites have been using to engage audiences that, now more than ever, enjoy their entertainment digitally.

How It Helped The Client

This report is helping ATHA advocate for additional funding and grants for the Bladensburg Battlefield along with making the case for further classification and protection of the historic site within the National Park Service's umbrella of American battlefield sites.
